If you’ve noticed low-flying helicopters over Tampa recently, they may be part of Hillsborough County’s expanded mosquito-control operations. During September 2026, mosquito-control treatments have been conducted across multiple Tampa neighborhoods as local officials respond to increased mosquito and dengue activity. That has created a reasonable question for vehicle owners: Should you wash your car after mosquito spraying? The short answer is that there is no reason to assume your vehicle’s paint has been damaged simply because mosquito-control treatment occurred nearby. However, if your vehicle is already covered with dust, pollen, water spots, road film or other visible contamination, a proper exterior wash can still be a sensible part of normal vehicle maintenance.
Why Are Mosquito-Control Helicopters Flying Over Tampa?
Hillsborough County Mosquito Management expanded mosquito-control operations during September 2026 in response to mosquito surveillance and dengue activity. Recent aerial operations have included areas such as Hyde Park, South Tampa, Ybor City, Town ’N Country, Seminole Heights, East Tampa, West Tampa, Palma Ceia, Wellswood and Riverside Heights. Some operations have involved helicopters flying at relatively low altitude and making repeated passes across treatment areas. Different mosquito-control operations may use different products and methods depending on whether crews are targeting adult mosquitoes or mosquito larvae. Hillsborough County reported using Dibrom insecticide during certain September aerial operations targeting adult mosquitoes. Other daytime operations used liquid Bti — Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis — to target mosquito larvae.

Can Mosquito Spray Land on Your Car?
A vehicle parked outdoors within or near an aerial treatment area may naturally raise questions about whether material from an application could reach exterior surfaces. But seeing a mosquito-control helicopter overhead does not automatically mean your vehicle has developed harmful paint contamination. The condition of a vehicle after being parked outside can also be affected by dust, pollen, rain, sprinkler water, mineral deposits, tree debris, bird droppings, road film and existing contamination. For that reason, avoid assuming that every film, spot or mark that appears after a mosquito-control operation was caused by the treatment.
Do I Need to Wash My Car After Tampa Mosquito Spraying?
Not necessarily. There is no credible basis here to tell Tampa drivers that their vehicle must immediately be washed simply because mosquito-control treatment occurred nearby. If the exterior looks normal, there may be nothing special you need to do. If the vehicle has visible dirt, film, spotting or other contamination, a proper exterior wash can be a reasonable maintenance step. Avoid aggressive scrubbing of a dry or dirty vehicle because rubbing contamination across the paint can contribute to scratching and swirl marks.
Will Tampa Mosquito Spraying Damage Car Paint?
Fred’s does not recommend assuming that mosquito-control treatment will damage automotive clear coat. Hillsborough County uses regulated mosquito-management products and determines treatment methods based on mosquito surveillance and public-health needs. For example, Hillsborough County has stated that the Bti used during certain September 2026 larvicide operations is a naturally occurring bacterium that breaks down naturally in the environment. That does NOT mean every mosquito-control treatment uses Bti. Some September operations targeting adult mosquitoes have used Dibrom insecticide. If you notice an unusual substance or condition on your vehicle and believe it came from a specific treatment, consult the appropriate mosquito-control authority or product information rather than assuming the paint has been chemically damaged. What If You Notice Film or Spots on Your Car?
First determine whether you are simply seeing normal exterior contamination. Tampa vehicles regularly accumulate road film, pollen, dust, rain residue, sprinkler minerals, insects and other contaminants. A safe exterior wash can remove ordinary loose contamination before it remains on the surface for extended periods. If marks remain after washing, do not automatically assume they are mosquito-spray damage. They could be mineral water spots, etching, sap, bug residue, bird-dropping etching, bonded contamination, existing paint defects, or clear-coat scratches and swirl marks. Don’t Scrub a Dry, Dirty Car
One of the easiest ways to create unnecessary paint defects is aggressively wiping or scrubbing a dirty vehicle without proper lubrication. What About Paint Correction?
Paint correction is not the first solution for ordinary surface dirt or film. Paint correction is designed to improve certain defects in the paint finish such as swirl marks, fine scratches and other correctable clear-coat imperfections.
